Judge Karlan’s 20-year judicial career has been defined by exceptional service at the Santa Monica Courthouse. During his tenure, he served as the West District Probate Judge for eight years, demonstrating extraordinary acumen while navigating complicated high-net-worth probate cases involving complex financial issues and emotionally charged familial dynamics. As a settlement officer, he presided over hundreds of settlement conferences in nearly every type of civil action, including probate, settling not only his own cases, but also those of his bench colleagues.
Ms. Alberio served as a Probate Attorney for the Los Angeles Superior Court for 36 years. During this time, she worked closely with Judge Karlan to hear probate matters, providing instrumental assistance with the preparation and review of matters coming up for hearing. She reviewed and analyzed thousands of probate cases dealing with real property disputes, interpretations of wills and trusts, breaches of fiduciary duties by executors, trustees and conservators, heirship petitions, and many other probate-related matters. Ms. Alberio is the recipient of numerous awards in recognition of her contributions to probate law. She is a two-time winner of the prestigious Timothy A. Whitehouse Award from the Beverly Hills Bar Association and a recipient of the coveted Arthur K. Marshall Award from the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Trusts and Estates Section.
